Hi everyone, It’s Cinco De Mayo today and I have made a tradition through my previous employer in Colorado to sport a nice Stache. This year is no different and you can watch my video on youtube today to see all of it’s fame and glory (my wife would beg to differ :-). Anyways let’s get to the list this is meant more than even to be about banter and discussion so let’s get our mustache on!!
#12 Patrick Ewing (Basketball)
Patrick Ewing is a legendary hall of fame center with the New York Knicks. He is unquestionably one of the best centers in NBA History. But you know what else is legendary about Patrick Ewing. You guessed it his awesome mustache!
11. Aaron Rodgers (Football)
Aaron Rodgers has been in the news recently for wanting out of Green Bay. He is a legend in Lambeau but it appears his days in Green Bay may be numbered. He is also a man of many styles and looks. You know what is Aaron best look? You guessed it, any look with that awesome mustache of his!
10. Jason Giambi (Baseball)
Jason Giambi was one of the most charismatic and popular players during his 20 year Major League career. He hit 440 home runs (including 9 career walk off homerun). But Jason Giambi’s mustache while with the New York Yankees may be the most legendary thing about his career, check out all it’s glory.
9. Walt Frazier (Basketball)
We had to another New York Knickerboxers Legend in Walt Frazier. He was one of the best NBA players in the 1970s but what he had beat on every other player of that time was that legendary sideburns and mustache. Just look at all of it’s fame and glory, just fantastic!
8. Al Hrabosky (Baseball)
Al Hrabosky was a solid ball player who had a nice pitching career from 1970-1982 (most notably with that Atlanta Braves). But the most legendary part of Hrabosky’s career is that awesome handlebar mustache Hrabosky sported across his playing career and even sometime after he retired in 1982.
7. Scott Player (Football)
Me being an Arizona guy I remember Scott Player very well for his great direction punting and his awesome one bar facemask. But he makes this list not for his facemask but for that awesome blonde handle bar mustache he had during his time with the Cleveland Browns. What a thing of beauty I must say!
6. Mike Ditka (Football)
Mike Ditka was a hall of fame tight end in the 1960s with the Bears, Eagles and Cowboys. He also became a great head coach during the 1980s into the early 1990s with the Bears. But Ditka was known best for that fantastic sweater and that legendary mustache. The mustache wasn’t flashy but well groomed to perfection.
5. Joe Namath (Football)
Joe Namath (or Broadway Joe) is most remembered for the Jets improbably run to the Championship in the 1968-1969 Season. This sparked the talks to merge the NFL which would occur two years later. But Joe Namath’s days with a mustache is what we really remember Broadway Joe for (well among many things, Joe lived a very outgoing lifestyle, was a different time in 1969 for sure).
4. Dale Earnhardt (Nascar)
Dale Earnhardt was one of most popular and successful drivers in the 1980s and 1990s. He had an infamous crash at the 2001 Daytona 500 that ended his life in tragic fashion and changed safety procedures in all of car racing for the better. We remembered Dale for so much greatness on and off the track, but one of the most memorable things about Dale Earnhardt was that legendary mustache of his!
3. Goose Gossage (Baseball)
Goose Gossage was one of the first great closers in Baseball history. His ability to close out games by throwing multiple innings was a weapon amongst his many years in the big league. But the most intimidating weapon of his was the mustache, gee ol golly I don’t know how anyone ever got a hit off this guy!
2. Lanny McDonald (Hockey)
Many great mustaches in NHL History but the only Hockey player we could include was a close second to our first selection (Handlebars is your clue). Lanny McDonald also played with the Colorado Rockies (yes they were a hockey team at one point!) in his 16 year career which is almost as awesome as his mustache. If Hans from the Bier Haus slot machine game was a real person I think Lanny McDonald is him.
1.Rollie Fingers (Baseball)
Rollie Fingers was a Hall of Fame reliever and one of the main Cogs of the great Athletics teams of the early 1970s. He was the first great reliever in MLB History as before the 1970s relievers were seldom used in baseball games. But the most memorable part of Rollie Fingers career and look was that well groomed to perfection handle bar mustache. Hans from Bier Haus/Lanny McDonald was a close second but noone could top Rollie Fingers. Apologies to Dennis Eckersley, Andre Dawson and Gardner Minshew who just missed the cut. Many great mustaches in sports history, hope you enjoyed the list!
I love this. Happy Cinco!
