Drew’s Top 12 Overused National Sports Storylines

Hi everyone, no one on a national website or channel will ever admit out loud that they are discussing this topic way too frequently to the point of nausea. But I am not employed by any of those networks so I will go ahead and say what topics makes many of us turn the channel or off the radio when the topic comes up. Many of you are guilty and get sucked into these storylines over and over again though otherwise the national outlets would not write or talk about these subjects as often as they do. So if I anger some of you I am sorry but I am not sorry, especially with this subject this is a great one for banter and discussion so please respond and let’s chat, thanks again for the support and have a great day!

12. A debate for debate sake

This has been true for many of years, especially since morning debate shows on the cable sports networks have become more popular over the past 15 years. But all over television and radio these programs will debate over a subject that maybe they don’t even have a disagreement with but we can see they are debating because agreeing is just not good for ratings, we all see through it though.

11. Antonio Brown Saga

Antonio Brown’s behavior started to become a bit bizarre in 2017 when he Facebook lived a Steelers postgame locker room celebration after a divisional round victory over the Chiefs. Brown would later in 2019 be MIA all week in preparation for a do or die game against the Bengals and show up ready to play on gameday for coach Mike Tomlin to say um no your inactive today. This fiasco would ship Brown out of town to the Raiders where it was a constant media circus of what is Antonio Brown doing today (his behavior was bizarre but not to the point it needed to be discussed everyday for six months). The story got very over played to the point that even when there wasn’t something to talk about outlets would still talk about it. Brown is now in Tampa and thanks to his new guardian Tom Brady (just kidding of course) we don’t hear much about Brown anymore.

10. NFL Mock Drafts

We get so consumed every year with NFL Mock Drafts that they start doing them for next year already. I have discussed this before that we have no clue what teams are going to do and the fact that the media talks about it so much is a little bit excessive. But kudos to Mel Kiper Jr., Daniel Jeremiah and Todd McShay who all do a great job for what they are required to do even if the Mock Draft subject is a little much at times.

9. Brett Farve Retirement Talks

This is a subject that went of for several offseason’ s starting in 2005, is Brett Farve going to retire or not? Brett almost all of the time until injuries ended his career in 2010 was duping us but hey sports talk needed something to talk about in the Springs in the mid 2000s so let’s speculate on what Brett is going to do every offseason almost everyday. This is one of the few before social media helped make everything overdramatized subjects on our list but if you are old enough to remember this subject it was certainly discussed and analyzed a little much for our taste.

8. Deflategate

The next couple of subjects will be about the balls in the sports we watch and love. Let’s begin with the Colts complaining about a deflated football in the 2015 AFC Championship game which was allegedly engineered by Tom Brady and the Patriots ballboy Jim McNally to help the grip on the football. Brady ended up getting suspended for four games to start the 2016 season but for an entire year before the suspension all we heard daily was media coverage about psi in footballs and deleted text messages. There was never much more information to the story than what I just mentioned but we heard and read about speculation on the matter everyday for literally a year. Saying that Brady has won three Super bowls since that game I guess deflated footballs did not matter all that much to his legacy and greatness.

7. The Baseball

You think the deflated footballs topic was overplayed what about the baseball topic. When homeruns were at record levels in 2018-2019 the baseball was juiced (maybe it’s more the launch angle pandemic that is also plaguing baseball today into a feast or famine bore fest). Then today since the baseball has allegedly been fixed that the ball doesn’t carry quite as far. First off, who cares and why do we have to write and talk about this everyday. It certainly is a tired subject but when we see the next no hitter thrown (maybe today) we will hear it’s because of the dead baseball we play with today.

6. Johnny Manziel

People naturally tend to read and talk about tragedies. That’s why the news talks about car accidents and political conflicts over acts of heroism. It’s a depressing yet true part of the human psyche that psychologist analyze everyday. Johnny Manziel is an NFL tragedy, a superstar at Texas A & M who upset mighty Alabama and won the Heisman Trophy. Manziel was drafted in the first round by the Browns and ended up being one of many draft bust by Cleveland. A large part of the issue was Manziel liked to party. Yet still whenever we hear about a potential comeback the media will talk about Manziel for days about how he’s doing in Canada or the Area league. Blake Bortles and Blaine Gabbert should be jealous (sorry Jags fans didn’t mean to include your draft bust, but hey Bortles did make it to the AFC Championship game!).

5. Cowboys/Yankees/Lakers chatter

We all know these teams are the biggest brands in all of sports but man do we talk about these teams a little too much? Even when the Lakers or Cowboys are bad the national outlets need to find a way to talk about their present and future because since it’s a big brand we all have to care right? A great example is first take talking about Lonzo Ball in July of 2017, the Lakers were awful that year. If Lonzo Ball was on the Grizzlies or Wizards would they be talking about this? Of Course not, but big brands sell I guess or so they say.

4. Dak Prescott’s Contract Dispute

Mercifully this story is over but for over a year this was a subject matter during the offseason, then during the season, and then during the following offseason. This might be the most annoying story to me because it was a story which was all speculation and no substance. But to go with my number 5 complaint Dak Prescott is the quarterback of the Cowboys so of course we all have to care so much that we won’t listen to your program or go to your website I suppose without knowing the latest opinion (which is all it was) on Dak Prescott’s contract.

3. Aaron Rodgers Vs the Packers

Colin Cowherd is one of my favorite sports media personalities. He always has great insight and takes. That being said I had to respond to him on twitter when he posted the Packers mini camp without Aaron Rodgers there last week with that I have Aaron Rodgers fatigue. The story was fascinating at first but now it’s the latest story with all speculation and no substance. We should be talking about the NBA playoffs right now and not about Aaron Rodgers because there is nothing to discuss about this matter until training camp.

2. Lebron Vs Jordan Debate

This has been going on for a very long time and really got heated up last year with the Last Dance documentary and the Lakers winning the title in the bubble. But still this debate is arguably the most lazy topic in sports. I say lazy because if you have nothing else to talk about today, hey let’s debate who’s the greatest ever Lebron or Jordan because someone will listen and get riled up. This is a topic that will never go away so if you are as tired of talking about it as I am we can always tune out and come back when another topic is being discussed or written about.

1.Timothy Richard Tebow

Tim Tebow is not the only devout Christian athlete in sports so it can’t be that reason why the National media talks about him at nausea. Reggie White was an Evangelical minister and one of the greatest defensive ends of all time. Tim Tebow is not the first athlete to try to make an incredible comeback after being out of the game for a long time. Rick Ankiel was a highly touted pitcher coming up through the Cardinals system and later came back as a serviceable outfielder with the Nationals and Astros. Whatever it is, a new Tim Tebow story gets the buzz that BTS would walking into a high school gymnasium today or the Backstreet Boys would walking into a high school gymnasium in the late 90s. Tim Tebow is known as being one of the most genuine nice guys in all of sports but to say that the media coverage over any Tebow story is overplayed in being nice. Thanks for reading, please comment below and let’s discuss.
